It is estimated that each family has at least one elderly member, while at the age of 65 the ones who systematically make use of health services exceed 90%! Population aging implies the increased use of health services, while the direct and indirect costs for patients with dementia or Alzheimer's in the third stage reach EUR 23,000 per year, while even in the first stage of the disease, the cost is substantial and reaches 10,000 annually.

Families who take care of their own people, who either suffer from dementia or some other relevant form, or have health problems associated with age, are aware of the unbearable financial and emotional cost, and most of them are unable to care for and treat their own people with safety and having the knowledge needed.

In Dilesi, Viotia, a new care center for elderly people, the Center of Gerontology and Welfare Support "Saint Porphyrius” fulfills for some people this great need for proper care. The model Center, which was inaugurated by His Eminence the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, in the presence of the President of the Greek Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, was the goal of Archbishop Hieronymus, according to whom "it will become the home of the grandparents of our childhood memories. It will be permanently open to relatives, friends, acquaintances, and strangers. A home that will transform the difficulty of aging into a blessing of the youth".

The Center will employ medical staff, doctors, physiotherapists, qualified nurses, assistants and administrative staff who will contribute to its smooth operation. Mr. Bartholomew added that "The impressive elderly support center ... embodies the respect for the human face as well as the confidence in the power of science and the progress of medicine, both of which in this case serve every individual unconditionally."
