Two Collections Meet at the Thessaloniki Byzantine Museum

On November 30, 2015, the Thessaloniki Municipality lent the Museum of Byzantine Culture icons and holy relics from the Municipal Art Gallery collection for a period of 30 years. This decision was based on the rationale that the Gallery’s displays would be preserved and maintained in the best way possible on the Museum’s premises. Two Exhibitions Meet displays conserved works—129 icons and holy relics—23 of which will be presented to the Museum’s general public and specialists for the first time.

Hosted in the Kyriakos Krokos Temporary Exhibitions Wing, Two Collections Meet opened on December 20 and will last until September 30, 2020, revealing how much the two collections—that of the Thessaloniki Municipal Art Gallery and the Museum of Byzantine Culture—complement each other. After all, the idea for the exhibition sprang from the realization that there were works by the same artists and ateliers in both collections.

Dating from the 14th century until the early 20th century, the collections—50 works from the Municipal Gallery and 79 from the Museum—include portable icons, objects of private worship, liturgical vessels, vestments, and holy relics, all representative of Orthodox religious art. .
