Saint Porfyrios

Saint Porfyrios was born to a very poor family on February 7, 1906 in Evia. His father immigrated to America, and the young boy left his birthplace at the age of 7 years old to work in Chalkida first and then in Piraeus. Having finished only the first grade of the elementary school he was able to read the life of Saint John the Kalyvitis whose life he wanted to imitate. At the age of 12 he went to Mount Athos under the guidance of two Fathers Superiors, Panteleimon and Ioannikios. At the age of 14 he became a monk and a while later God gifted him with clairvoyance. When he was 26 years old he was ordained priest at Saint Charalambos of Kymi who named him Porphyrios. He lived a virtuous life deeply philosophical and passed away in 1991 at Mount Athos, at his beloved Kafsokalyvia according to his will.
