Saint Athanasios
Athanasios the Great was distinguished for his faith, for his thirst for knowledge and for his solid defense of the Orthodox faith. Born in 295 A.D. to poor parents he undertook the responsibility of his education and studied by himself, achieving the continuous acquisition of knowledge and wisdom for which he is praised. At the age of 33 years old he was elected Patriarch of Alexandria and from this position he fought for the condemnation of the heretic teaching of Arius. The path of this struggle led him to victory although it was marked by tribulation and exile. He passed away in 373 A.D. and his memory is celebrated on January 18.
