Saint Elisabeth
The Princess Elizabeth Feodorova was born in 1864. She was the granddaughter of the Queen of England, Victoria and of Ludwig IV, the Grand Duke of Hesse. Her benevolent, compassionate and pure soul was evident since her first years. She treated all people and especially those in need, with humility and kindness. At the age of 20 she married Sergios Alexandrovitch, the brother of the Tsar Alexander III. She learned with eagerness the Russian language, worshiped the Christian religion and embraced it as a way of life. She helped the poor and needy tirelessly; she organized military hospitals during the Russian - Japanese war, she founded the "Fraternity of Saint Martha and Mary", through which she offered care and comfort to orphans and needy children, by creating hostel, school, hospital, library, etc. During the First World War, the Fraternity became a shelter to orphaned children and a part of it was converted to a military hospital. During the October Revolution, although she had the opportunity to leave Russia, she stayed to share with her people. In 1918 she was taken to an abandoned mine where she was killed by a grenade. Her body and this of her subservient nun Barbara were transferred in 1920 to the crypt of the Russian monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane.
