Saint Gerasimos

Saint Gerasimos was born as George in Trikala of Corinthia in 1506 AD. to an aristocratic family of Byzantium, the well-known family of Notaras. He was raised and educated aristocratically. At the age of 20 he went to Zakynthos, an education center of that period. However, his orthodox faith led him to the spiritual and religious centers of his time, Constantinople, the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Mount Athos, where he became a monk. He lived as an ascetic in the cell of Saint Basil and departed for a long journey to the Holy Land. He ended up in Jerusalem, where he was ordained deacon and presbyter by the name of Gerasimos. He returned to Zakynthos 20 years later and lived an ascetic life. The pressure from the Venetian rulers to convert him to Catholicism drove him to Cephalonia. There, he lived as a hermit in a cave for 6 years and built a monastery naming it New Jerusalem. His reputation was spread throughout Christianity. He passed away on August 15, on the Day of the Dormition and his memory is celebrated one day later, on August 16.
