Vaioforos - The entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) ,Monastery of Stavronikita

The most important monasteries of Greece, the Meteora and the monasteries of Mount Athos always selected the best hagiographers and important artists in order to adorn the interiors of their temples, according to the Christian tradition. In the 16th century, hagiographers of the famous Cretan School were requested to adorn temples with portable icons and walled-in artworks. One of the first hagiographers to accept the invitation of the Mount Athos Monasteries was Theophanis the Cretan who signed some of the most important icons of the Monasteries, real treasures of the Athos state. His creations were an exemplar to posterior hagiographers. The icons of Theophanis and his two sons, Symeon and Neophytos as well as of Georgis, one of his Cretan pupils, decorated with frescoes the nave and the altar of the Holy Monastery of Stavronikita of Mount Athos, as well as naves of other monasteries. One among the fifteen icons, elaborated by Theophanis at the Monastery of Stavronikita of Mount Athos is Vaioforos, one of the icons that compose the Twelve Feasts (the twelve most significant celebrations of Orthodoxy).
