Apostle Varnavas

In the early Christian era, together with the students of Christ and the 12 Apostles, there were sacred people guided by the Holy Spirit, who aided in the spreading of the Gospel. One of them, Apostle Varnavas the Levitan of Cypriot origin spread the Gospel together with Apostle Paul and proved to be a valuable friend and colleague. Apostle Paul accompanied by Apostle Varnavas and Marcos set off for the first important apostolic tour with first stop cities of Salamina and Paphos in Cyprus, and they succeeded to spread the Christian faith in Jerusalem, Rome, Alexandria and also Cyprus where Varnavas assisted by Marcos, organized their Church. His name in Hebrew means "son of consolation" and is a nickname given by the twelve Apostles because he was comforting the poor and those in need. He passed away in 61 A.D. According to the tradition his Holy relics were collected by Apostle Marcos and were housed in a cave having in his arms the Gospel by Matthew that he copied himself. His memory is celebrated on June 11.
