Saint George
Saint George is one of the most popular saints of Christianity, known with the names Great Martyr and Triumphant. Born to Christian parents he followed a military career in the Roman army. By Emperor Diocletian’s decision he was promoted to chief commander and colonel of the imperial guard. In 303 A.D. during the big persecution against Christians, Saint George who never renounced his faith was horribly tortured until his death on April 23 303 A.D. His remains were transferred and buried in Lydda, in Holy Land, where Constantine the Great later built a temple.
Very important portable icons, over three thousand in quantity, are kept at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi, covering a period of ten centuries, from the 10th to the 20th century. From the first period of the Paleologi (1261-1328) there are many icons originating from the workshops of Thessaloniki and Constantinople; these are temple icons having limited painting themes, one of which is this of Saint George.
