Saint Hypomoni

Wife of Manuel B’ Paleologos, her real name being Eleni Dragasi, she was the daughter of Stephan Dousan, the sovereign-heir of the great Serbian king. She was born to a royal family and was raised according to the byzantine ideal and her unbending faith to God. In 1390 A.D., at the age of 19 she wed Manuel B’ Paleologos, few months before he became byzantine emperor. She reigned with him, she endured humiliation by heathens in order to save the already tottered empire, but she enjoyed the raising of their eight children two of which became emperors. Eleni-Saint Hypomoni was righteous, loved her people and was there for everybody, always with a gentle and sweet word. She was prudent and brave and ruled with justice and love. She had a particular love for the monasteries where she took refuge to repose and get strength. Her husband became a monk at the Monastery of Pantocratoras few months before his death; she became a nun after his death, in 1425 at the Monastery of Lady Martha and took the name Hypomoni. Three of her children also became monks. She passed away on March 13, 1450 having lived 35 years as empress and another 25 years as nun. Her memory is celebrated on March 13 and on May 29.
