Saint Paisios
Saint Paisios was born in Farasa of Cappadocia, Asia Minor on July 25 1924. He was baptized Christian and left for Greece together with thousands of refugees. His family resided first in Corfu and then in Konitsa where Arsenios finished the primary school. From an early age his wish was to become a monk. He worked as carpenter, served the army as radio operator and was dismissed from the army in 1949. On that same year he visited Mount Athos for the first time and cloistered in various hermitages. During his stay at the Monastery of Esfigmenou he took the name Averkios. For many years he lodged in many monasteries where he formed his character and was distinguished for his diligence, his love for his "brother monks" and his dedication to the Christian faith. In 1962 he went to Mount Sinai where he spent two years of ascetic life at the Cell of Saints Galaction and Epistimi, then returned to Mount Athos and stayed till the end of his life. In 1966 he got seriously ill and was submitted to surgery. His only wish was to return to Mount Athos where he was already known for his way of thinking and a large number of people wanted to meet him at his Cell. Despite his fragile health he continued to provide help, as a workman, to the restoration of many monasteries responding positively to the requests of his multiple visitors. With his health deteriorating he insisted to return to Mount Athos, his real home, where he passed away on July 12, 1994. The Saint Holy and Council in January 2015 ranked him among the Saints of the Orthodox Church. His memory is celebrated on July 12.
