The Birth of Virgin Mary

The Natal of the Virgin Mary, the celebration of the Mother of God is commemorated by the church every year on September 8, starting at the end of the 5th century. The Natal of the Virgin Mary was first established as an official celebration of the Church by the Pope Serge A’ and was comprised in the celebrations’ directory of the West Church; four centuries later, the Natal of the Virgin Mary was celebrated by the whole Christianity.

The Natal of the Virgin Mary inspired eminent hymn composers like Romanos the Melodist, as well as hagiographers who created top quality icons and superb tapestries. In byzantine hagiography in the icon of the Natal, the Virgin Mary is depicted being placed inside a cradle like a baby, with Saint Anne present in most of the icons, is frequently depicted as half sitting on a bed, with a sad expression, having servants attending on Her for being in childbed. Saint Joachim’s figure is also present. The colors of the icon are intense, the faces are bright and a joyful tone is everywhere.
