Virgin Mary Glykofilousa- Sweet Kissing
At the Museum of the Monastery of Arcadi, the Holy Monastery that binded its fate with the dramatic historical moments of Crete, is exhibited a wooden portable icon that depicts the Virgin Mary, Sweet Kissing. The icon, dated in the first half of the 18th century is crafted in wood with egg tempera and stays intact despite the multiple decays.
In the icon of Virgin Mary Glykofilousa-Sweet Kissing, the Virgin Mary embraces little Jesus with her left hand while she holds his left hand with her right hand and leans tenderly her cheek to his. The right foot of Jesus is slightly forward and at the right and left top side of the icon, two angels’ busts are depicted. The intense colors, the bright coloring of the flesh, the austere and plain design of the clothes refer to another work that is kept in the Monastery, the icon of Saint George the Header. Both works belong to the same chronological period.
