Virgin Mary Dexiokratousa - Hodegetria - Directness
The Virgin Mary Directress (Hodegetria) the "dynamic" icon of the Virgin Mary that always returns wherever she desires, composes an esteemed iconographic subject by many hagiographic schools. The Virgin Mary Directress with Jesus in her arms at her right side, with the geometric intense lines of the faces and of the garments, is a copy of the icon that is found in the Monastery of Preveli, at the Rethymno province in Crete.
The Holy Monastery of Preveli, at the outfalls of the river Kourtaliotis, was established in the 16th or 17th century and had associated its activities with important historical facts having the monks taking part in the battles for the independence of Greece. The Monastery being empty in ourdays, was one of the mostly known Monasteries of the country, in a beautiful green landscape. Today vestments, ecclesiastical documents, icons and a rich archive material are being kept in the Museum of the Monastery.
