The name "Paramythia", meaning consolation, was given to this figure of the Virgin Mary, where her sight calms and comforts the soul. According to Christian tradition, Virgin Mary Paramythia at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi was rescued by the miraculous intervention of the particular icon of the Virgin Mary, when threatened by pirates in the early 14th century. The icon of the Virgin Mary is kept in the chapel of the Temple, where the monks keep lit a vigil candle and chant prayers daily.
