An event in honor of Monk Mattheos Vatopedinos

 

A scientific and musical event to commemorate the 170th anniversary since the death of Monk Mattheos Vatopedinos (1774-1849), will be held at Pallas Theater in Athens, on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. 

The Monk was a great musician, codecographer and teacher of the psaltic art, whose work has been studied by researchers and musicologists and has rightly placed him among the most prominent personalities of the psaltic tradition, of the Vatopedi Monastery. 

During the event, Archimandrite Ephraim, Abbot of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi will be talking about the Monk as a chanter, calligrapher, codecographer, outstanding teacher and composer. About the work of Mattheos Vatopedinos both in Constantinople in the early years of his musical career as well as in the Monastery of Vatopedi after the end of the second decade of the 19th century and up until his death will also be talking researchers musicologists, Achilleas Chaldaeakis, Professor of Byzantine Musicology and Psaltic Art at the Department of Music Studies of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Prof. Dr. Georgios Konstantinou at the Musical Studies Department of the Ionian University, and Constantine Lanaras, Msc Musicology. In the second part of the event, which will start at 8.00 pm, hymns - compositions of Mattheos Vatopedinos will be chanted under the guidance of choirmaster Elder Damaskinos Neoskitiotis Tuesday, December 10, 2019, Pallas Theater. Admission is free.
