Award for the integrated Alzheimer Unit Day Care Center "KARELLEIO" of the NGO "Apostoli"
The scientific community says that 1 in 5 adults over the age of 65 will be infected later in his/her life by the Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The vigilance in the care of people who suffer from the disease and their relatives and the accelerated research regarding the causes of the disease but also the pharmaceutical treatment are considered mandatory. Treating the disease has many aspects and apart from scientism it also needs coordination, organization and above all, a human face.
The integrated Alzheimer Unit Day Care Center "KARELLEIO" of the NGO "Apostoli” of the Archdiocese of Athens won the gold Healthcare Business Award 2018 in the category "contribution to health by an NGO" for its contribution to handling dementia through nationwide information and awareness campaigns of the public regarding the disease and the practical application of preventive measures such as conducting memory tests. The actions of the unit are carried out throughout Greece, in more than 30 mainland and island regions, during which over 3,000 individuals were examined for free and an equal number of individuals were informed.
The unit's Director Catherine Efthimiopoulou mentioned that the purpose of the unit’s actions is to build awareness regarding the necessity of preventive examinations and of course the elimination of the stigma that follows people who suffer from the disease. The award reflects the reward of years of efforts and encourages us to strengthen them further.
